When the Germans attacked Poland, Esther Berkowitz and her fiancé David married, then fled East to territory occupied by the Soviet Union. During deportation to Siberia by the Soviets, Esther gave birth to her son, Daniel. The family’s journey took them to the Ural Mountains and then to Kazakhstan.
